    • Find out which entrance exam(s) they accept, the cut-offs, specialisations offered, fees, placements.

    • Note deadlines (exam registrations, application deadlines for B-schools).

  2. Register & Prepare for Entrance Exam(s)

    • Register for entrance exams you plan to take (CAT, XAT, etc.). For example, CAT 2025 registration opened August 1 and closes September 13. The Economic Times

    • Mock tests, past papers, time management.

  3. Take the Exam(s)

    • Appear for them as scheduled.

    • Get your score / percentile.

  4. Apply to B-Schools

    • Once entrance exam scores are out (or sometimes while waiting), apply to the B-schools you chose. Fill their forms, pay application fees, upload documents.

    • Some colleges use entrance exam score only; others also consider academic records, work experience etc.

  5. Shortlisting

    • Based on entrance exam scores plus other criteria (graduation marks, category, work experience, sometimes academic discipline).

    • Institutes issue shortlists for next rounds (WAT / Essay / Written Test / Group Discussion (GD) / Personal Interview (PI)). Skilloutlook.com+1

    • Group Discussion or Case Writing / Case Study rounds

    • Personal Interview or multiple interviews

    • Sometimes other assessments (leadership potential, extra curriculars, etc.)

  7. Final Selection & Offer

    • Based on combined performance: entrance exam + GD / PI / additional rounds + academic record + work experience etc.

    • Institutes publish the final merit / selection list.

  8. Document Verification & Fee Payment

    • Once selected, you need to submit required documents (10th, 12th mark sheets, degree certificates, entrance exam scorecards, category/domicile certificates if applicable, work experience certificates etc.) for verification.

    • Pay fees and confirm admission.

  9. Joining the Program

    • On the start date of the term. Make sure all criteria are fulfilled (especially if provisional admission was given).

Cuts, Weightages & What Matters

  • Cut-off percentiles/scores: Depends hugely on the institute and exam. For top IIMs, CAT cut-offs are very high (often 95+ percentile for general category). For other good colleges, lower. Skilloutlook.com+1

  • Weightage breakup: Different schools assign different weights to components. For example:

    • Entrance exam score: often the largest chunk.

    • Academic record (UG marks / grades; 10 + 12 + degree).

    • Work experience (if relevant).

    • Subsections: GD / PI / Essay / WAT etc.

  • Category / Reservation: Seats reserved for SC / ST / OBC / PwD etc; relaxations provided in marks / eligibility criteria. Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad+1

  • Diversity / Background: Some top B-schools prefer diversity in academic background, gender, region etc. This can be a factor in final selection.

Deadlines & Important Dates (for 2025)

  • CAT 2025 registration begins August 1; ends September 13, 2025. Exam date: November 30, 2025. The Economic Times

  • NMAT 2025 exam window: November 5 to December 19, 2025. Indiatimes

  • SNAP 2025, MAT, CMAT etc have their own registration / test dates — you need to check each exam's official site. Shiksha+1

Fees, Return on Investment & College Choice

  • MBA fees vary widely: from moderate amounts in state/public colleges to very high in top private & premium institutions. It could range from a few lakhs to over 20-25 lakhs (or more) for the full two years. For example, IIM Mumbai course fee is quite high. IIM Mumbai

  • Places, infrastructure, alumni network, brand value, faculty quality, specialisation strength, elective options, industry tie-ups, placement record all matter when evaluating cost vs benefit.

Tips to Increase Admission Chances

  1. Start Early: Choose exams, understand patterns, build basics ahead.

  2. Practice Mock Tests: Especially for exams like CAT, XAT etc. Time management is crucial.

  3. Work on Weak Areas: If quant or DI or verbal is weak, spend extra.

  4. Strong Profile: Extra-curriculars, leadership, internships/work experience help.

  5. Clarity in Specialisation: Know what specialisation you want and why. Be ready to articulate this in essays / interviews.

  6. Apply to a Range: Top tier, mid tier, safe options. Don’t put all eggs in one basket.

  7. Document Preparation Ahead: Marksheets, certificates, photographs — avoid last-minute rush.

Challenges & What’s Changing

  • Increasing competition, so cut‐offs are rising.

  • More institutes offering alternate modes (online/hybrid).

  • New exams or test formats may appear.

  • Admissions process may increasingly consider non-academic factors.

  • Some changes in eligibility or relaxations possible depending on regulatory/national guidelines.
